Glencoe Marathon Recce

Brian (Rosie’s Dad), Rosie and I met in Glencoe a few weekends ago to do a recce of the marathon route. Over the course of the weekend we ran the whole route, from the Red Squirrel campsite in Glencoe to the Ben Nevis Visitors Centre in Fort William.

The run itself was amazing and I was delighted to share it with the Doull’s! Spectacular views, great route, and a fantastic run over part of the West Highland Way.

Setting out from Base camp!

Starting, in the sunshine, at the Red Squirrel campsite, we followed the path up the glen, passing the infamous “little white cottage”.

During the run we passed some beautiful lochs, running along the muddy edges before following the path away from the road.

Quickly the path dwindles into single track road before becoming a very thin “path” through the wet, boggy ground!

The Devil’s Staircase

After a bit of cross country shenanigans we arrived at the base of the Devil’s Staircase. Not sure if we were horrified by the thought of having to run up it so soon or just pleased to be back on an actual, dry, runnable, path!

We quickly arrived at the summit! Though steep, the hill is short and the fantastic views both on the way up and at the summit more than make up for it!  After a quick photo stop at the summit it was time for a fantastic descent on the other side! WEEEEE!

This is gonna be THE BEST fun!

After the downhill fun from the Devil’s Staircase, we had a gradual run along the hillside before a steep descent towards Kinnlochleven. My hat goes off to the guys we saw cycling UP the hills!

Arriving in Kinnlochleven, the official start of the Glencoe HALF Marathon. Time for some munchies and a wash! 😀 End of day 1.

Day 2: from Kinnlochleven there was a short section of road before we were straight onto a steep path that zig zagged out of the valley. Hard work!

The best photo in the world ever taken. Ever. By Brian one-shot Doull.

From the top of the climb out of Kinnlochleven it was a pretty steady, undulating, long stretch of farm track leading through the valley.

After the farm track came the continuously undulating, single track path. THE MIDGE’S WERE AWFUL! As this was a single track path, and it was the middle of the summer, our progress was slowed by visitors walking the West Highland Way. Think we gave quite a few people a wee startle!

Get out the way, we’re nearly there!

After climbing up, dropping rapidly through some woods, then climbing up again, we had a super long and steep downhill for a mile and a bit before firing out at the Ben Nevis Visitors Centre.
