2014 – The Making of a Runner

“We should run a Marathon!”

What a year! 2014 was the year my obsession with running began and, since then, my life has changed completely! Here are my highlights of 2014.

Decide, Commit, Succeed

The reason I started… The Vienna City Marathon. After a night with friends in Slockavullin, (where I lived at the time) the idea was planted that I needed to set myself a goal for 2014. Bill, an inspirational friend and avid runner (finished 1st in the Deli marathon 2014 for his age group!), suggested a marathon. The idea stuck as I was looking to get fitter and so my venture into running started. It was tough, and in those early stages I struggled. The days soon passed, turning into months and before I knew it I was on a plane to Vienna.  I was fitter and happier than I had ever been before.

My marathon was over but the running never stopped! It became a passion of mine and I quickly grew fitter, stronger and had more energy than ever before. A few months down the line I got a new job, so my girlfriend and I moved to Dundee and joined a local club, the Dundee Road Runners.

The Road runners are some of the most lovely and motivational people I have ever met. They may not know it, but I draw inspiration from several of the members. They have kept me going even on those days when I just DON’T feel like running; they never fail to encourage me and rekindle my enthusiasm for running.

Goals For the coming year:

Go further! This year my main goal is the Kintyre Way Ultra-marathon in May; a 36 mile adventure over the kintyre trail, which is near the area I was brought up, taking in stunning views and challenging my endurance.

Go higher! I plan on running up more hills, the idea being that I can start ticking off munro’s and enter a few hill races!

For me 2014 was a fantastic year!  I can’t wait to see what 2015 brings!

May your year be filled with running, love and adventure! Get out and hit them trails!
